Although Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) have been a requirement for building, selling or renting a home since 2007, a minimum energy standard which all properties to let must reach was not established until two years ago, in 2018. In April of that year it became a legal requirement that all privately rented homes be awarded an energy efficiency rating of E or above and that any that do not meet this standard are not let until they do. In April 2020 the rules became stricter, requiring that any existing property that does not conform to the minimum energy efficiency standard (MEES) be no longer let. In October 2020, the Government released a consultation document suggesting it wants to lift the minimum energy efficiency standard on all rental properties to B and C. Preparing for any changes is really important and we are here to help with advice.
